Hi all!
This is an article from today's NYTimes regarding sexual cannibalism in animals. Talks a little about sperm competition as well.

I was going to post the actual article, but it comes out looking rather odd so you'll have to go to the site if you're interested.
Enjoy!

Very cool, Judy! Thanks. It's a nice reminder that similar behavior can result from different selection pressures. I especially like the last sentence, "Does she boost her pheromones, not because she needs sperm but because she needs food?" Who "needs" sperm? Not this female! ;)
Thanks Judy! We just discussed cannibalism in mantises in the Evolution of Human Sexuality seminar because Dawkins uses it as an example of seemingly selfish behavior. I'm going to alert the lab to this article...crediting you of course. ;-)
And Emily, you may not need sperm, but you want it. Whoa, this just got wildly inappropriate. I apologize.
Glad to hear you guys liked it! Aaron, I can't take full credit for the article, it was sent to me by Diana who got it from a listserv.
Here's a completely unrelated tidbit for the day:
Cindy Meston used to have a sewing show on TV in Canada called "Sewing & Surging with Cindy." :-)
Sewing & Surging with Cindy!?!?! That's hilarious. I hate that I love gossip about academics. I guess I can't get too upset with my mom for watching ET, because I would totally tune into AT (Academics Tonight) if there were such a show.
Maybe one day I'll tell some students and colleagues that the famous Dr. Emily Stone started a quilting club at FAU. (They probably won't be surprised.) ;-)
I have to admit I would totally watch AT too if such a show existed. :-)
I'll keep my ears open for anymore interesting or funny tidbits!
Yeah, in fact, you'd better tell your students about it! I still can't believe that student interest in a quilting club wasn't greater than it was at FAU. ;) (If only I had a TV show, like Cindy!)
